Cheap and easy taxi-travel is one of the things that I miss most in San Francisco. In London, where taxis are a way of life, all manner of things turn up in cabs, including tens of thousands of mobile phones (often unclaimed, since the fiercely competitive British cellular companies will replace lost phones gratis rather than risking customer defection), Royal bodyguards’ PDAs (rich with personal numbers for the Royals), goldfish, and suitcases full of diamonds.
